Message From the Nevada Section Emergency Coordinator
Greetings:
There isn’t much in the planning drill or exercise wise for the immediate future. September is going to be a busy month for many of you so nothing is scheduled in September drill wise.
Take a look at this month’s QST as it has many articles related to Emcomm and Public Service. We can always learn from what other groups have done and what worked and what didn’t.
In Clark County Bill Smith W7HMV will be returning as EC. Bill has been working on the Vigilant Guard exercise since the first planning meetings. I have provided some exercise injects that will be used across the State. In particular NDEM, WCARES, Nye Co. ARES and Clark County ARES will be involved in this exercise scheduled in November. The exercise will of course include HF voice and Winlink messaging. An ICS-205 form will be prepared and I will likely include a 60M channel in it. However our standard Section wide frequencies will be used.
For the first time in these many years I have delegated the SET planning to the Section Leadership. Doug KA7FOO, ASEC will oversee the final date and exercise plan put together by the DECs. In years past I was the sole DEC SET planner which was delegated to me by Don. The SET will focus on ALL areas of Nevada and the Eastern Sierra ARES District.
Work on NDEM HF continues much thanks to the Carson City team supporting the SEOC. (Dale KJ6IX, David N7TNX, Dick KJ7UK)
Lightning has taken it’s toll on our DMR network down here. I haven’t been able to hear anything on the DMR NA network even from our southern Clark County sites. Bob WB6TNP hosts a number of AllStar and DMR connections servicing the area and even parts of SoCAL. The lost underscores how dependent we are on VOIP and TELNET networks. Although we use these systems in our ARES communications it serves as a reminder how important it is to have a reliable HF network. Portability, back up power, good NVIS antennas, and relationships with other emcomm organizations here in Nevada and adjoining Sections to assist us when we need it is critical. The BrandMeister system is working well out of Henderson NV thanks to Terry NX7R as well as Kent’s W7AOR system on the east side of Clark County.
Tony W7XM tells me that plans are underway for a Hamfest of sorts in the Reno NV area. I will be sure to attend once it’s scheduled. The NVCON will be held at the end of March and first part of April in Las Vegas.
