Southern District News From Bill, W7HMV; Our 2nd Quarter Membership meeting had 31 attendees and several guests, including Bud Marshall from the Las Vegas office of the Nevada Division of Emergency Management (NDEM) and Carlito Rayos, Emergency Manager of the City of North Las Vegas. Both Bud & Carlito spoke about their respective responsibilities and how ARES could assist them. Also attending were John Bigley, N7UR, Pacific Division Assistant Vice Director, and Gary Grant, K7VY, our NV Section Manager. Both Gary and John gave us a summary of the state of affairs of the NV ARRL and events at the ARRL's Centennial Convention, Emphasis was made for members to submit letters to the ARRL in support of and seeking our Congressional Representatives co-sponsorship of HR 4969, known as the Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014. Lee, N7NKH reports that he was able to check into the HF test earlier in the month on 7280 from up in Lincoln County. Jerry, KC6ILH from over the hump in Pahrump reminds us all to be ready for thunderstorms.....this time of year, good advice! I attended a meeting with the City of Henderson this month in preparation for a training session in August and prior to attending the FEMA National Training Center's Integrated Emergency Management Course with them in September.

Comment 2014 July Alpine, CA & Douglas County, NV Sections Comment for ARES monthly report The yearly Tour of the California Alps also known as the Death Ride bicycle event took place July 12th in Alpine County. Almost 3,500 cyclists took on 129 miles of Alpine County's mountain roads. The Tahoe Amateur Radio Association (TARA) coordinates the ham radio support communications. TARA, DCART members and other area hams contribute their volunteer hours in planning and manning ride sites throughout the county. DCART members especially help with the ham radio communications coordination with the Alpine County Dispatch/Sheriff's Office.
The Alpine County Sheriff/Dispatch offices are in their new location now that is next to the old Courthouse where their previous quarters were there in Markleeville. KV7S, KA7UIS, and KA7AJQ helped reestablish our ham station in their new office.
KV7S had previously added a filter to the radio left with the office so the Dispatcher's transmissions would not override the signals from and to our ham radio. Also, he provided the temporary two meter mag mount antenna which construction men placed on top of the building. We coiled up the long cable on the outside. Then the day of the event, we uncoiled the 100 feet or so of coax, ran it through a window, across the hallway and into the Dispatcher's office. The Dispatcher rolled a little couch across the coax in the hallway. The building was not in use that day anyway so safety concerns were addressed. Our ham communicators shared a corner of her office and with the extra speaker, the Dispatcher could hear all our traffic and dispatch immediately any medical resources needed. For future ham station use from her office, a mag mount antenna and long run of coax would have to be planned and provided. In the future it may be possible to plan a dedicated ham radio antenna along with their own. Ours is still on the old building.
Sheila Clement, KA7AJQ Alpine County, CA and Douglas County, NV ARES Emergency Coordinator Churchill County ARCC ARES participated in the July Activation Drill, both on HF, and on VHF. Richard C. Bischoff AEC K7ET Washoe County This month was the Tahoe Rim Trail, July 18 through the 20th where SNARS provided communications for the event coordinators. Those of us in ARES used the event as training in preparation for an emergency. Quite an event, a two day back country foot race where some runners ran 100 miles over about a 32 hour event, brutal. Some of us were drenched from rain storms and experienced some near strikes from lightning. All in all an exciting weekend. This was the first time some of us participated. Thanks to Bob WA6MTY; Doug KA7F00; Arlan KA7ZAU; David N7TNX; Rick KF7KEM; Randall AF7HD; Ken KF7BNX; Steve KS6A; Dave KF7EGU; Robert , AC7FM; Alan KZ6B ; Victor KG7BOE; Blake N6BNS; Thomas, WA9ETO; Sam KG7HBY; Rod KD7QXO; Michael, NZ7G; Natalie N7JKM; for helping with this event. BOB MILLER EC WA6MTY
Planning is underway for the 2014 SET. This year we will conduct a power outage whereby Hams will need to use portable power. Many ideas of how to coordinate with our neighboring States is ongoing. We may have some new MOUs in the process soon for CA and AZ.
